Copper cable theft derails restart plans of monorail; 3 FIRs filed in February
MUMBAI, Feb. 26 -- The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), which is working to restart monorail services between Saat Rasta and Pratiksha Nagar, has reported three instances of copper cable theft in February, raising fresh concerns over security along the corridor.
Monorail services were suspended last year following multiple mishaps. The authority has since applied to the Commissioner of Railway Safety for clearance to introduce new rakes before resuming operations.
According to MMRDA officials, FIRs were registered on February 10, 21 and 22 at Wadala, Chembur, Agripada and RCF police stations. Local police have been requested to increase patrolling along the existing monorail security arrangements.
Rubal Agarwal, managing director of Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Ltd, said police have been asked to examine CCTV footage and identify those involved. On February 10 at around 1.30am, an inspection by the electrical team between Chembur and Saat Rasta found all cables intact. However, in the early hours of February 22, a returning inspection team was stopped near the Eastern Freeway by police and informed that unidentified persons had been seen cutting cables and fled....
