Mumbai, Nov. 4 -- International Master (IM) Aronyak Ghosh defeated Polish Grandmaster (GM) Bartel Mateusz in the tie-breaks to enter the second round of the FIDE World Cup in Arpora, Goa on Monday.
It was a spirited comeback by the 21-year-old Indian, who lost the first classical game before turning the tables in the second to take the battle to the tie-breaks. Ghosh (rating 2514) drew the first set of tie-breaks 1-1 with the Polish GM (rating 2575) and was clinical in the second stage of rapid games for an overall 4-2 win.
Among other Indians to advance through tie-breaks were GMs SL Narayanan and Diptayan Ghosh.
Playing with pieces in the first game, Narayanan beat IM Steven Rojas of Peru in 52 moves and then wrapped up the match with white, winning in 22 moves. Diptayan ground out a win in 70 moves in the first game against GM Peng Xiongjian of China, and then won the next in 46 moves....
