Beed village evacuated after fissures appear on roads, walls of houses
PUNE, Oct. 19 -- An entire village - Kapildharwadi - in Beed district has been evacuated after deep cracks appeared on roads, and walls of houses and schools, triggering fears of a possible landslide. Officials from the district administration believe the incident was caused by incessant rainfall in the region in September, which has made the hilly terrain unsafe for habitation.
The fissures were first seen on September 30 which widened eventually. Several houses have collapsed, while many others developed deep cracks.
"Eighty families, who make up a population of 525, have been shifted to the Shri Manmathswami Devsthan temple, two kilometers from the village," said Chandrakant Shelke, tahsildar of Beed.
Last week, a team from the Geological Survey of India (GSI) visited the site and observed that in the absence of natural drainage system, continuous water percolation during the rainy season had weakened the soil strata, leading to cracks and land subsidence. P6...
