Asian shooting championships: Elavenil-Babuta pair claims title
New Delhi, Aug. 24 -- A day after she won the individual gold in 10m air rifle, former world No.1 Elavenil Valarivan climbed the podium again, this time after clinching the mixed team title with Arjun Babuta at the Asian Shooting Championships in Shymkent, Kazakhstan on Saturday.
The Indian pair got the better of China's Lu Dingke and Peng Xinlu 17-11. Both Elavenil and Babuta were in fine form, regularly hitting inner-10s to keep the Chinese at bay. They hit only one 9 apiece, a testament to their focus and precision.
The Indians took a 13-9 lead after winning the 11th series but the Chinese pair took a timeout and came back with two excellent shots to make the score 13-11.
However, Elavenil and Arjun did not score below 10.5 after that and won the next two rounds to seal the match.
Elavenil-Babuta had topped the qualification with 634 points, followed by compatriots Mehuli Ghosh and Rudrankksh Patil who aggregated 632.6. Only one team from a nation advances to the final, meaning Ghosh and Patil lost out. China too fielded two pairs with Lu-Peng totalling 632.3 and advancing to the medal matches ahead of Liu Yafei and Wang Honghao (631.8).
The two bronze medallists were South Korea and Japan.
The result means Elavenil ends her campaign with three medals - her twin gold accompanied by a women's team bronze. Babuta, who ended fifth in the individual event, came back with gold in the men's team before combining with Elavenil for his second gold.
The Indian pair of Shambhavi Shravan and Naraen Pranav grabbed gold in the 10m air rifle junior mixed team event. They beat China 16-12 after a dominant show....
