Anjuman clinch Harris Shield
Mumbai, Dec. 26 -- Anjuman I-Islam Allana were crowned champions of the 129th Harris Shield, winning the prestigious MSSA U-16 tournament for the second time in a row after beating Al-Barkaat MMI English by eight wickets in the final at the Wankhede Stadium.
Resuming with the bat on Day 3, Al-Barkaat finished with 243/3 in 40 overs, with Arhaan Patel completing his century and remaining unbeaten on 105.
But, after bundling out Al-Barkaat cheaply in the first innings and then scoring big, it turned out to be a comfortable chase for Anjuman. The victors chased down 111 in 19.5 overs losing just two wickets.
Former India captain Dilip Vengsarkar graced the final as the chief guest, while Karsan Ghavri was the guest of honour.
"Congratulations to Anjuman. They have been winning this trophy for a long time," said Vengsarkar. "In the olden days, a state team is good if they play well against Mumbai. In school cricket, we just say, 'if you play (well) against Anjuman Islam'... that is the aura they had. They won the Harris and Giles Shield for so many years."
He added that there will be players from the two finalists that will become the next Virat Kohli, Sachin Tendulkar, Jasprit Bumrah or Rohit Sharma.
While complimenting the MCA for the good health of school cricket, Vengsarkar pointed out the gap in inter-collegiate cricket. "Unfortunately, college cricket is missing in this time because Mumbai University is just not bothered about cricket, which is a bit unfortunate. College cricket is the supply line for Mumbai cricket, which is choking now. And for that, I would blame the Mumbai University and the vice-chancellor as well," he said.
Brief scores: Al-Barkaat MMI English School 135 & 243/3 in 40 ov (Arhaan Patel 105*, Pradnyankur Bhalerao 67*) lost to Anjuman I-Islam English School 268/9 & 111/2 in 19.5 ov.
Individual awards: Best batter: Laxmanprasad Vishwakarma (Anjuman); Best bowler: Golu Pal (Dnyandeep Seva Mandal); Best all-rounder: Yuvan Sharma (Anjuman)....
