Kochi, July 26 -- A rape and murder convict, whose arm was amputated years ago, cut through the bars of his prison cell at Kannur Central Jail, scaled a 25-foot boundary wall with the help of a rope made out of clothes and managed to escape early Friday. However, his freedom was short-lived as police managed to nab him within four hours. The convict, identified as Govindachamy (41), is serving a life sentence in connection with the rape and murder of a 23-year-old woman in 2011. He was located and taken into custody from a well in a derelict compound in the Talap area of Kannur town, barely three kilometres from the prison, the officials added. Kannur superintendent of police (SP) P Nidhinraj told reporters that they received the information about Govindachamy's jailbreak around 6.30am, adding that they suspect the convict to have made the escape between 4.15am and 5am. "We relayed the information to all the ranges of the police across the state and through the media to the public. We analysed a lot of CCTV footage and received information from the public," Nidhinraj said. "Based on such information, we were able to locate him inside a well in the Talap area. We managed to catch him within 3.5 hours of his escape from prison." The SP said Govindachamy had been planning his jailbreak for some time and police are probing if he received any assistance from inside the prison. Following his capture, the convict was questioned by the Kannur city police. Officials said that he is likely shifted to the Viyyur Central Jail in Thrissur. In the aftermath of the incident, the prisons and correctional services initiated a probe....
