Amid clashes, 60% turnout in polls
MUMBAI, Dec. 3 -- Amid battles in courts over election deadlines and clashes between leaders of BJP and Shiv Sena - alliance partners in the ruling Mahayuti -- 264 municipal councils and nagar panchayats went to polls on Tuesday. Over 48% voter turnout was recorded till 3.30 pm, which was expected to cross 60% by the end of voting (the final figures will be shared today).
Polling in many parts of the state was marred by violence, stone pelting and altercations allegedly involving workers of the ruling parties.
The discord between BJP and Shiv Sena in Ambernath and Badlapur gave way to fights between workers of the two parties. BJP candidate in the Badlapur Municipal Council Ramesh Solase's 16-year-old son was allegedly beaten up by Shiv Sena leaders which led to violent clashes, calling for local police's intervention to disperse the crowds. In Dahanu, Palghar, a clash ensued between Shiv Sena candidate running for president of the municipal council and BJP workers over a trivial issue.P5...
