Aman Khan hits 86, Adhatrao 51* as Mumbai boys entertain vs Mumbai
India, Nov. 19 -- Like all the players who are part of the home dressing room in the ongoing Ranji Trophy Elite League Group D game at the Wankhede Stadium, Puducherry's Aman Khan and Sidhaant Adhatrao are also products of the Mumbai cricket system. Born into cricketing families and raised in the city, they did well to earn selection to the Mumbai senior side.
However given the competition for places, they were not able to cement their places and like many other cricketers before them, chose to ply their trade in domestic cricket as professionals for other associations. For Puducherry's Mumbai boys, this Ranji game is special because it comes with the chance of playing at a historic venue.
They couldn't do much in the first innings as the visitors' folded up for a paltry 132 but made amends in the second innings, both helping themselves to half-centuries.
After conceding a first innings lead of 498 runs, the game was over as a contest and the bet was on that the match would be over by the end of Tuesday's play, the third day of the four-day game.
Khan and Adhatrao however, came together to deny Mumbai an early win and forced the match into the fourth day with an entertaining partnership of 137 runs for the sixth wicket. Joining forces with their side down to 91/5 after being asked to follow-on, Khan blazed away to a 44-ball 86 with eight sixes and six fours while Adhatrao was batting on 51 off 54 helping their side reach 231/6. Puducherry now trails by 267 runs.
Khan, who has played white ball cricket for Mumbai, was harsh on spinners Tanush Kotian and Musheer Khan, clobbering them for 45 off 15 balls (four sixes) and 25 off 10 balls (three sixes) respectively. He put behind a stumping chance on 26 and completed his fifty off 29 balls.
Adhatrao reached his fifty off 49 balls. Khan was finally dismissed with 228 on the board, clean bowled by Musheer
"It's funny actually, we were discussing that if the two of us bat together then it will be Mumbai versus Mumbai. That is what happened. Obviously we have played so much at the Wankhede, we know the pitch so much better than the other boys," said Khan about his partnership with Adhataro.
With Mumbai players on both sides, expectedly there was no shortage of mid-pitch banter. "It was a fun challenge, we have played together since childhood so there was banter going on."
Talking about the reason for making the switch, Khan said: "In the 2023-24 season, even though I was playing in the IPL they didn't make me play in Mumbai's selection matches as well, I don't know for what reason so I made the switch."
Brief scores: Mumbai 630/5 decl. Pondicherry 132 all out (Mohit Kale 53*; Shardul Thakur 3/22) & (f/o) 231/6 (Aman Khan 86, Sidhaant Adhatrao 51*, Neyan Kangayan 42)....
