Ajit Pawar says he had 'nothing to do with it'; Opposition puts Mahayuti under the scanner
PUNE, Nov. 7 -- Deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar has publicly distanced himself from the controversial land deal in Pune linked to his son Parth, saying he had "nothing to do with it".
"When children grow up, they become adults and do their own business. I don't support any wrong deeds. If I make a mistake, I try to correct it. But in this case, I am not involved," Pawar told the media on Thursday.
While chief minister Devendra Fadnavis has called the issue "serious" and ordered an investigation, Pawar claimed he was neither aware of the transaction, nor involved in any aspect of it. "I am not even remotely linked to it. Around three or four months back, I had heard that something of this sort was being discussed, and at that time I had warned that I would not tolerate any wrongdoing," he said.
Asked about the registered address mentioned in the deal - which matches his residence - Pawar replied, "That bungalow belongs to Parth Ajit Pawar. That address is in his name."
The deputy CM also claimed he had never called in any favours from the government for his family. "I have never called any officer asking them to favour my near or dear ones. On the contrary, if anyone acts against the law, they must be dealt with as per the law," Pawar said.
While Ajit Pawar has swiftly distanced himself from the gathering storm, Parth's aunt and senior NCP (SP) leader Supriya Sule was cautious while reacting. "I do not believe Parth will do anything wrong. There are different kinds of information coming out in this case from various people," she said, admitting that it is possible Ajit Pawar is being targeted from within the ruling Mahayuti alliance.
The Opposition, meanwhile, is not holding back. Senior Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar remarked, "The file relating to the deal moved at rocket speed through government departments. Within hours, the Directorate of Industries not only approved the land transfer for an IT park and data centre but also waived Rs.21 crore in stamp duty."
Demanding a judicial inquiry into the deal, Wadettiwar accused Ajit Pawar of hypocrisy. "The deputy chief minister, who often asks for how long farmers will get things free, has now ensured free land and tax waivers for his son's firm."
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Ambadas Danve claimed that Parth's firm Amadea Enterprises, which had a paid-up capital of just Rs.1 lakh, had passed a resolution on April 22 to set up an IT park. "The transaction was completed in just 27 days, and the Industries Department waived the stamp duty," Danve said.
Industries minister Uday Samant, however, said the documents submitted by Parth Pawar's firm were in order. "My department had nothing to do with the incentives and waivers given to the firm. The land does not belong to the MIDC," he said....
