Mumbai, June 24 -- After the Bombay high court's intervention, the state government has reversed its decision to impose reservation on vacant seats in minority colleges. The new government resolution (GR) issued on Monday said that social reservations will no longer apply to minority institutions in the state, and even after being surrendered to the centralised admission process (CAP), seats will be filled on the basis of merit. The issue first surfaced when minority institutions noticed changes in the seat allotment process for the 2025-26 First Year Junior College (FYJC) admission cycle and raised concerns about how unfilled seats would be allotted. The government then issued a GR that said minority colleges could fill 50% of their seats with students from their communities, and the unfilled seats could be offered to students from other minority groups. The GR said that if seats still remained vacant, CAP rules would apply along with social reservations. However, the Maharashtra Association of Minority Educational Institutions (MAMEI) and several minority-run colleges opposed the change saying it infringed upon their constitutional rights. The court then stayed the original GR, forcing the government to issue a new GR restoring the original admission framework where minority institutions are exempt from social reservations, even for seats that eventually fall into the CAP....
