A silver lining for Indian racing
India, March 13 -- The Mumbai season enters its final furlong with just two weeks of racing left.
The Zavaray Poonawalla Carnival, with a beer fest theme, will feature Sunday's bumper ten race card. It will have as many as four graded races, every race a million-plus and the day pay out a notch above Rs.2.5 crore, about half of which is from the munificent contribution of Zavaray. The idea of a Racing Carnival was initiated a few years ago by Zavaray and Ram Shroff as an end of the season bonanza for the owners.
The top prize of the day is the Poonawalla Auction Sales Stakes, with a whopping Rs.1 crore purse and prize money of Rs.2.5 lakhs to each runner placed 7th and below. The race is restricted to only horses bred at the Poonawalla Farms. This restriction had caused a furore amongst a section of the breeders. But as the sponsor was guaranteeing the total stakes, those in favour pointed out nothing prevented other Studs from doing the same. The race appears to be between Invictor, who ran 4th in the PBMM (Poonawalla Breeders' Multi-Million), and the two Leitir Mor fillies - Gunfire, the only runner in the field to have won twice but over sprints, and Mystica, who has run behind Margaretta in her last start.
The PBMM was won by the got abroad Margaretta. Though not amongst the top fancies, the giveaway was that she was bred at Sohna who has a great record with got abroads. Karthik, who trained favorite Buckingham, mentioned that his loss may have been a blessing in disguise, as it keeps alive his Indian Derby chances with no horse hitherto having won both races.
In a casual talk with Zavaray, he mentioned he could up the stakes for the PBMM even to Rs.5 crore, which would be bigger than the Indian Derby. But that was contingent on the Stewards affixing the "Juvenile Derby" name to its nomenclature.
Racing got a sigh of relief with the resumption at Hyderabad and Bangalore, which are starting April end for an extended summer season. The Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC), which was saved from the ravages of glanders, will soon see a much-needed surge in membership income. Even though its twice failed attempts to increase the fees for members' children by 2-5x was a dampener, the fee for new members is set at Rs.1.25 crore, which will potentially give a big boost in income to the club. Finally, good times for Indian racing are around the corner.
The return of Sandesh in the saddle could still see a three-way fight for the jockeys' championship, as even though joint leaders Trevor and Yash are 7 ahead, the title could well be decided on the final day....
