89-year-old patient in ICU 'bitten by rat' dies hrs later
MUMBAI, March 17 -- An elderly woman in the ICU of a civic-run hospital in Bhayandar west was allegedly bitten by a rat on her hand, according to her relatives. The patient, 89-year-old Suhasini Mandekar, was admitted to Pandit Bhimsen Joshi Hospital four days ago and was on ventilator support when the alleged incident occurred on Sunday night. Mandekar died a few hours later on Monday.
At 6am on Monday, when Mandekar's relatives checked on her, they noticed an injury on her hand, which was bleeding. Raising questions about hygiene and demanding to know why the nursing staff were unaware of the alleged rat bite, they approached the hospital administration with a complaint.
When word spread, members of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) arrived at the hospital, demanding action against the staff and doctors. "The hospital is run by the civic authorities, who have taken the lives of patients for granted," said an MNS member.
Hospital dean, Dr Jafar Tadvi, told HT that he had ordered a departmental inquiry and issued a show-cause notice to the doctors and staff attending on the woman. "We will suspend the nurse and doctor if negligence is proved," said Tadvi....
