4 teachers booked for gaps in poll duty
Thane, April 6 -- Four school teachers from Ulhasnagar were booked last week for alleged dereliction of election duty. The teachers were deployed as Booth Level Officers (BLOs) for the January 2026 municipal corporation election.
The accused teachers, Santosh Gorde, Monika Narang, Mahesh Badekar and Anil Patil, were assigned pre-election duties in September 2025 but allegedly failed to carry them out adequately. Following an complaint against the teacher, an FIR was registered on March 31 at Ulhasnagar Central Police Station under the Representation of the People Act, 1951.
According to the complaint filed by Assistant Electoral Registration Officers Vishal Kadam and Ganesh Shimpi of the Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation, the accused teachers were responsible for tasks such as mapping, verifying unclear photographs and obtaining clear ones, and eliminating duplicate voter entries.
However, an inquiry revealed that the accused completed less than 20% of the assigned Special Intensive Revision (SIR) work, which included mapping and photograph verification. They also allegedly failed to effectively identify and eliminate duplicate voters.
Senior Police Inspector Shankar Awtade of the Ulhasnagar Central Police Station told HT "We called the teachers to the police station and recorded their statements. Further investigation in the matter is ongoing."...
