3 held for extorting Rs.99L from bizman
MUMBAI, Dec. 25 -- The Dindoshi police have arrested three men for allegedly posing as senior police officers and extorting Rs.99 lakh from a Malad resident, a con that drove the victim to the brink of suicide.
The accused were arrested on Tuesday following a complaint lodged by the victim's wife on December 15. The 39-year-old victim, who runs an LPG agency, was later traced at Dahanu railway station, where he was allegedly contemplating suicide, fearing imminent arrest.
Police said the fraud began in September last year when the victim lent Rs.10,500 to an acquaintance, Praveen Khedekar, who later sought an additional Rs.50,000.
Soon after the transfer, the victim received calls from a few men posing as senior police officers, accusing him of involvement in a contract killing and demanding money to avoid arrest.
The callers repeatedly escalated their demands, with one posing as the Mumbai police commissioner seeking Rs.20 lakh to "settle" the case. The victim told police that cash payments were collected by a senior citizen at public places, while some amounts were transferred online.
"As the threats continued, the victim paid nearly Rs.80 lakh in cash and Rs.19 lakh through digital transfers, raising loans to meet the demands," a police officer said.
Fearing arrest despite the payments, the victim left home on December 15. No one knew where he went.
Acting on his wife's complaint, police found him as he was contemplating suicide at the Dahanu railway station.
Subsequently, a case was registered under section 308 (extortion) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Call data analysis led police to Khedekar, Praveen Kate and another accomplice, all of whom were arrested, the police said....
