2 linked to Myanmar cyber scam hub held
Mumbai, Nov. 13 -- The central bureau of investigation (CBI) has arrested two private agents in connection with the cases linked to the illegal trafficking of Indian nationals to the alleged cyber scam centre in Myanmar, officials familiar with the matter said on Wednesday, adding that the cases were registered on the complaints of CBI officials who spoke to the victims on Tuesday.
According to CBI officials, the two agents, identified as Soyal Akhtar and Mohit Giri were found returning to India with the rescued nationals and were nabbed on the arrival in Delhi.
India, on Thursday and Monday, repatriated hundreds of its nationals from Thailand in aircrafts, days after they managed to escape to the Thai border town of Mae Sot from an infamous scam compound in Myanmar, following a crackdown by local authorities. Over 500 Indian nationals were among 1,500 people from over two dozen countries who crossed over to Thailand late in October following the raid on the cybercrime hub of KK Park in the Myanmarese city of Myawaddy.
A second CBI official said, "During the course of the probe, the investigation agency had identified multiple agents operating on behalf of these foreign scam compounds". "Two such agents, Akhtar and Giri, had trafficked victims from Rajasthan and Gujarat to these compounds and were found returning to India along with the rescued individuals and were immediately nabbed upon their arrival in Delhi," the official said.
CBI's probe revealed that many Indian nationals are being trafficked to scam compounds in Myanmar, often via Thailand. An organized, international human trafficking syndicate is found at play that entraps these individuals through false promises of high-paying jobs and attractive employment opportunities abroad, an official said....
