174 suspected bogus voters booked in Ambernath
THANE, Dec. 21 -- The Ambernath police on Saturday booked 174 Bhiwandi residents for unlawful assembly after the Election Commission's flying squad found them loitering suspiciously near Krishna Marriage Hall in Ambernath. The accused had allegedly been brought to the area for bogus voting at the behest of certain candidates in the Ambernath Municipal Council poll, said Shabbir Sheikh, senior inspector of the Ambernath police station.
On Saturday morning, some Congress and BJP workers raised an alarm about a large group of men and women loitering suspiciously near Krishna Marriage Hall. The group initially claimed that they had come to attend a wedding at the hall, though no wedding was scheduled there. Later, a flying squad of the Election Commission visited the spot, questioned the group and found that they had been called by some candidates for the purpose of bogus voting.
"We have booked 174 Bhiwandi residents, including men and women, for unlawful assembly based on the flying squad's complaint," said Sheikh. "Notices have been served to all the accused and further investigation is underway to ascertain the identity of those involved."
In a separate incident on Saturday morning, clashes broke out between BJP and Shiv Sena workers in the Matoshree Nagar area of Ambernath after they accused each other of distributing cash to voters. Police resorted to mild lathi charge to disperse the crowd and the situation was brought under control within a short time, said Sheikh.
