New Delhi/Kolkata, Nov. 24 -- Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, on Sunday, alleged the implementation of the ongoing special intensive revision (SIR) process has become chaotic, opaque, and even deadly for field officials. "Under the guise of SIR, chaos has been unleashed across the country," Gandhi posted on X, as he claimed that 16 booth-level officers (BLOs) have died in the last three weeks due to stress, heart attacks, and suicides linked to excessive workloads, sharing a related media reports. Calling the exercise an "imposed tyranny," he argued that the Election Commission of India (ECI) has created a burdensome system where citizens flip through "thousands of scanned pages of a 22-year-old voter list" just to find their names. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge alleged that the BJP's "vote theft has now taken a deadly turn." He claimed BLOs and polling officers, overwhelmed by workload, are being "driven to suicide." Offering condolences to the deceased's families, Kharge asked, "Who will deliver justice to these families?" Meanwhile, at least four BLOs engaged in the ongoing SIR of electoral roll in West Bengal were admitted at hospitals in various districts between Saturday and Sunday after they complained of illness caused by work pressure. These incidents happened hours after a third BLO died in the state on Saturday, triggering a political row. The 53-year-old para teacher from Chapra in Nadia district even left a note blaming the ECI. West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee expressed shock over the BLO's death and said this has become "truly alarming now". Senior BJP leader Rahul Sinha claimed the suicide note was 'fake'. TMC Lok Sabha member Kalyan Banerjee targeted the BJP and the ECI saying its leaders were creating pressure on the BLOs. Denying the allegation, Bengal BJP spokesperson Debjit Sarkar said, "Banerjee has lost his mind because it is the TMC that is under pressure. People of Bengal do not believe in these allegations. They want the SIR."...
