Mumbai, March 22 -- The Supreme Court's (SC) 50% cap on reservation is sacrosanct and no court has challenged it in the past 26 years, the petitioners opposing the 16% quota for Marathas told the Bombay high court (HC) on Wednesday. The arguments seeking the striking down of the quota will continue on Monday.

Replying to the state's submission that the 50% limit was not breached, but was in accordance with the Supreme Court's observation that it can be crossed in exceptional and extraordinary circumstances, senior advocate Arvind Datar told a bench of justices Ranjit More and Bharati Dangre that the state and Gaikwad Commission's basis of arriving at the conclusion was faulty.
