'Infra Man' campaign by Shinde camp ruffles feathers in BJP
MUMBAI, May 26 -- The ongoing cold war between deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde and chief minister Devendra Fadnavis has intensified with a fresh offensive: Shinde's camp has begun projecting him as the 'Infra Man' who boosted several infrastructure projects in Mumbai and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). The assertion has upset the BJP, and its leaders have dubbed the campaign "unfortunate" and against "Mahayuti Dharma" (principles of the ruling Mahayuti alliance).
The Infra Man moniker comes from Shaina NC, former BJP leader who, ahead of the assembly polls, joined Shinde and contested from Mumbadevi. "Our leader Eknath Shinde is clearly the infra man of Maharashtra who is also popularly known as the 'Dedicated to Common Man' " (Sic), said her social media post on May 21. The newly minted Sena leader has launched a social media campaign, naming various infrastructure projects in Mumbai and MMR, and tagging Shinde, the "transformer of Mumbai" in all her posts. Not just that, she has announced in another post that a book titled 'Transforming Mumbai' will be launched on June 12.
This campaign has ruffled the feathers of the BJP which, up until now, had been taking the credit for all the infrastructure projects under CM Fadnavis' leadership from 2014 to 2019. BJP leader Chitra Wagh wrote a post on social media tagging Shaina NC and expressed the party's displeasure at her dubbing Eknath Shinde as 'Infra Man'.
"With the slogan 'Deshat Narendra, Rajyat Devendra (Narendra at the Centre and Devendra in the state)', the Mahayuti got a majority in 2014," went Wagh's post. "2014 to 2019 was a golden era in Maharashtra's development. The state touched new highs in all sectors with projects like the Coastal Road, Atal Setu and iconic projects like Metro 3 and the Samruddhi Expressway. It was only our leader and then chief minister Devendra Fadnavis who brought in all the necessary permissions for the projects and executed them successfully."
Wagh, who conceded that Shinde had also "supported Fadnavis during that time", said that Fadnavis had "showed his big heart when he gave an opportunity to Eknath Shinde to become CM". "In such a situation, if someone against the Mahayuti dharma runs a campaign called 'Infra Man', it is unfortunate," she said in her post on Saturday, in which she tagged Shaina. "Till recently, you worked for the party and you should have kept that in mind. The people of Mumbai and Maharashtra know everything."
Even after this, however, Shaina NC on Sunday posted about the Bal Thackeray Memorial Project and tagged only Eknath Shinde and MP Shrikant Shinde. She did tag the Mahayuti but not Fadnavis or the BJP.
Political analyst Hemant Desai said, "Since 2014, the BJP has been taking credit for developing infrastructure in Mumbai and Maharashtra so the Shinde camp's promotion of their leader as an 'Infra Man' is upsetting them. This is a new type of cold war between Shinde and Fadnavis."
When contacted, Shaina NC denied that she was running any campaign and claimed that she was only emphasising the transformation of Mumbai by the Mahayuti government. "Credit is due to Devendra Fadnavis for his infrastructure boost during his CMship, and then Eknath Shinde during his," she said. "Now Fadnavis, Shinde and Ajit Pawar are all working for the transformation of Mumbai."...
