'Check threat to Unnao rape victim's family'
New Delhi, Aug. 29 -- The Supreme Court on Thursday directed the Uttar Pradesh government to assess the threat perception of the 2017 Unnao rape case survivor's family, the case in which former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator Kuldeep Singh Sengar is the main accused.
The direction was passed following the allegations by the survivor's family that soon after their security was withdrawn in March, miscreants attacked and ransacked their house.
Alleging that Sengar is a powerful man seeking vengeance after being convicted in the rape case in 2019 and later in a separate case involving the death of the victim's father in 2020, the application moved by the victim's mother sought recall of the March 25 order withdrawing CRPF security cover to all family members barring the victim.
A bench of justices Pankaj Mithal and PB Varale said, "Conviction in a trial does not mean threat perception has vanished," and asked the state to respond to the plea within two week....
