MUMBAI, May 1 -- It is not difficult to understand why the bowlers are unhappy with the proceedings in the Indian Premier League. So much favours the batters that a tough day with the ball has become the norm in the T20 league. The Impact Player rule has only made their job even harder. It means that even if the top order is dismissed, the team can bring in an extra batter, making the batting line-up seem endless. To balance the Impact Player rule advantage, Zaheer wants extra options for the bowlers too. "Like there has been the impact sub rule (in favour of the batters), maybe you can look at giving one or two bowlers five overs, creating a balance of having good bowlers bowl extra overs in the match," said the former India left-arm pacer at an event in Mumbai on Wednesday. Even someone like Jasprit Bumrah has not been able to have the desired impact this season, having claimed just two wickets in seven games. In the T20 format, many wickets are taken by building pressure on the batters. With the extra option cushion, the players bat freely. Hence, one thing former India pace spearhead Zaheer Khan is excited about regarding the newly launched EUT20 league, where he is part of the Belgium franchise, is that there will be a better balance between bat and ball. It was his first statement when it was his turn to speak on stage. "In European conditions we have seen the pitches provide that balance, you have overcast conditions, the ball is going to swing. The bowlers have something to play with, if the pitches are like that you will see the balance between the bat and ball." He is happy with the results toward the end of the first half of the IPL where the bowlers dominated some games. "I am very happy to see that bowlers are coming back in a tournament like the IPL right now, you have seen some low scores, you have seen 155-run games being defended, you have seen a team getting all out for 76, so I think the right kind of approach is working out. Teams that are having good balance in bowling are making a good impact in the tournament," said Zaheer. Among the standout individual performances, Lucknow Super Giants left-arm pacer Mohsin Khan made his mark in the last match, picking up a fifer. A promising bowler, his career has been hindered by injuries. After missing the entire last season, he has picked up nine wickets in four matches in the ongoing IPL. "The skill is there, it is about how he makes an impact, said Zaheer. "He has been down and out with injuries so it is great to see him coming back. It is about how he makes the impact, the skill is there, the fitness has to be backed properly for him, because for the last two-three seasons it has been stop and start." "I think for him it is about playing more and more matches." Teen sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is the batter who has tormented the pace bowlers the most this season, not even sparing Jasprit Bumrah and Josh Hazlewood. What is it about Vaibhav that makes him attack the big names as well? "He is just a special talent. One who is not carrying any baggage, just approaching the game in the purest form, seeing the ball, hitting the ball. Having that kind of talent and ability to do that consistently, is the most exciting part of someone like Vaibhav Sooryavanshi when you watch him.
