PRAYAGRAJ, April 28 -- Tension gripped Mauaima in Prayagraj after the body of a 22 year old youth was found under suspicious circumstances on the bank of the Sharda Sahayak Canal, barely 500 metres from his home, triggering a road blockade by angry villagers. The deceased was identified as Ajay Kumar, a resident of Gadhchampa village. Ajay, who worked with an orchestra group, had returned home on Sunday after performing in Mandhata area of Pratapgarh. Late in the evening, a resident of a nearby village informed Ajay's family that he was lying unconscious under a jamun tree near the canal embankment. Family members and villagers rushed to the spot, only to find him dead. His mobile phone and slippers were missing, and his phone was switched off. A dark mark was also noticed around his neck, raising suspicion of foul play. Following the incident, Ajay's elder brother Ghanshyam lodged a written complaint against unknown persons at the Mauaima police station. As police sent the body for post mortem examination, villagers intercepted the vehicle at Malkhanpur intersection and staged a road blockade, demanding action and alleging murder. After sustained persuasion, the police managed to calm the protesters and clear the road, following which the body was sent for post mortem examination. SHO of Mauaima police station Pankaj Awasthi said the circumstances surrounding the death appeared suspicious and several people were being questioned.
