LUCKNOW, Aug. 20 -- Seven years after it was introduced, the Railways' directive of 2018 to regulate baggage weight akin to airport protocols, is yet to be implemented. While the rules officially exist, systemic enforcement remains absent. Officials from multiple railway divisions cite a lack of infrastructure, such as baggage-weighing machines at station entrances and parcel offices equipped to handle and process excess baggage. Without these, enforcing the rule is practically impossible."Checks happen only on a few trains or platforms, often driven by passenger complaints. It is very difficult to implement this across hundreds of stations as there is a lack of mechanism including a weighing machine," said Sashi Kant Tripathi, chief public relations officer (CPRO), North Central Railways (NCR), Prayagraj.Northeastern Railways (NER) CPRO Pankaj Kumar Singh, said "the order is not new. So far, the division is not thinking of implementing it as of now." When contacted, Northern Railways (NR) officers did not respond to queries. According to the Press Information Bureau, in August 2018, the Railway Board announced that passengers would be allowed to carry baggage free of charge within class-based limits, 70 kg in AC First Class, 50 kg in AC-2 tier, 40 kg in AC-3/sleeper, and 35 kg in second class.
