New Delhi/Gurugram, Sept. 3 -- Thousands were evacuated from near the Yamuna on Tuesday as the river's waters flooded several neighbourhoods in Delhi, with authorities warning that the situation could worsen on Wednesday, and neighbouring Gurugram struggled with waterlogging again as extreme weather continued to plague parts of north India, especially Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir and Haryana. Officials warned that the Yamuna, which was flowing at a height of 206.45 metres at 8pm - 0.30 metres above the evacuation threshold - would on Wednesday likely surge past the 207m mark for only the fourth time in over six decades, as more showers hit the city and took its annual rain quota past the 1,000mm mark. Schools were shut in Gurugram on Tuesday and several residents worked from home as large parts of the city remained inundated. Noida and Ghaziabad announced that schools would be shut on Wednesday, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted more rain.
