PRAYAGRAJ, Nov. 15 -- The Allahabad high court has held that while trial courts in state are at liberty to write their judgements either in Hindi or in English, they cannot write judgements partially in English and partially in Hindi. A division bench comprising Justice Rajeev Misra and Justice Ajay Kumar made this observation while dismissing a criminal appeal filed by one Vaid Prakash Tyagi, the informant in a dowry death case challenging the acquittal of the husband. The court noted that as Uttar Pradesh is a Hindi-speaking state, the very objective of writing judgments in Hindi in state is that ordinary litigants can understand the judgement written by the court and also the reasons assigned by the court for either allowing or rejecting their claims. It termed the judgement by a sessions court in Agra a "classic example" of judgments written partially in English and partially in Hindi. The bench directed that its October 29 judgement be placed before the Chief Justice for appropriate action and circulated to all judicial officers in the state, expressing "hope and trust" that they will write their judgements in one language only....
