New Delhi, June 7 -- The sight of women officers flying sorties in Operation Sindoor - in the wake of the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that claimed lives of 26 civilians - was a "matter of immense pride" for the nation and a testament to the Indian Constitution's transformative promise of equality, liberty, justice and fraternity, Chief Justice of India Bhushan R Gavai has said. Delivering an address at London's historic Gray's Inn on Thursday evening to commemorate 75 years of the Indian Constitution, CJI Gavai invoked the memory of Dr BR Ambedkar, who was one of Gray's Inn's most illustrious alumni. "In the last Republic Day Parade in 2024, the entire contingent of all forces and paramilitary forces comprised only women officers.Today, we see women officers not only flying in the Opeation Sindoor, which is a matter of pride for all Indians, but also they are in Siachen and they are in sea and it's really a matter of great pride for Indian citizens," he said. The CJI drew a direct line between such achievements and Ambedkar's insistence on gender justice, referencing key judgments that secured permanent commission rights for women officers. These rulings, marked a profound shift in the inclusion of women in the forces, he said. "It is only because of the Constitution that a person like me, who comes from a humble background, who studied in a municipal school, can aspire to and attain the position of CJI," he said. HTC...
