Women and child health in focus as CM Yogi flags off statewide campaign
LUCKNOW, Sept. 18 -- Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Wednesday announced that frontline Anganwadi workers will be provided smartphones along with an increase in their honorarium. Simultaneously, he launched a series of health camps across all 75 districts of the state, focusing on women's health and childcare.
The state-level programmes were inaugurated at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Scientific Convention Centre, King George's Medical University (KGMU), while Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Swasth Mahilaye, Sashakt Mahilaye campaign (September 17-October 2) and the 8th Rashtriya Poshan Mah (September 17-October 16) from Dhar, Madhya Pradesh via video conferencing.
During the event, CM Yogi performed the Annaprashan ceremony for children and distributed nutritional supplements at a baby shower organised for pregnant women.
Extending his greetings to Prime Minister Modi on his 75th birthday, the chief minister said the PM's message was an inspiration and that the 25 crore people of Uttar Pradesh were committed to fulfilling his vision, according to a state government press release.
"This 15-day health drive will offer not only free tests but also treatment," the CM said. "To ensure the availability of medical specialists, Aarogya Mandirs, community health centres, and medical colleges have been linked for better healthcare delivery."
CM Yogi announced the launch of 20,324 health camps across all districts, where free screening for blood disorders, blood pressure, diabetes, oral cancer, breast cancer, cervical cancer, anemia, and tuberculosis will be conducted. The campaign also emphasizes prenatal care, child vaccination, and public awareness. In addition, nearly 507 blood donation camps will be organized to encourage youth participation.
Underlining the government's commitment to women's empowerment and child welfare, CM Yogi highlighted flagship initiatives such as Beti Bachao-Beti Padhao, Matru Vandana, Kanya Sumangala, and the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, all launched under Prime Minister Modi's leadership and widely welcomed across India.
The CM also spotlighted healthcare infrastructure improvements, noting that 41 new medical colleges have been established in Uttar Pradesh over the past eight years, including a recent inauguration in Amethi-the first in 70 years. He stated that the infant mortality rate has dropped from 45 to 37, while the maternal mortality rate currently stands at 141 per 100,000 live births.
"These figures reflect that Uttar Pradesh is on the right path," Yogi said. Between 2015-16 and 2019-21, the state recorded a 5.1% decline in anemia, a 6.6% decrease in stunting, a 7.4% reduction in underweight children, and a 0.6% drop in wasting. Improvements in maternal and infant mortality rates, alongside reductions in anemia and malnutrition indicators, indicate steady progress.
