Meerut, June 10 -- A 35-year-old woman was allegedly strangled to death in Muzaffarnagar by her father and brother over a long-standing romantic relationship they disapproved of. The victim's body was later taken five kilometers away from the family home, doused in petrol, and set on fire in a forest. The charred remains were discovered by police four days later, on June 3, in a decomposed state, with maggots crawling on the corpse. After a week-long investigation, the Muzaffarnagar police cracked the case and arrested the victim's father, Rajveer Singh, and brother, Sumit. Another accused, Hardayal-a truck driver and friend of the victim's brother-remains absconding. According to senior superintendent of police (SSP) Sanjay Kumar Verma, the victim, identified as Saraswati, was originally from Jadbad Katia village in the Kakroli police station area. She did a private job in Gurgaon and had been in a relationship with a man named Amit Kumar, who hailed from the same village. The two had known each other for over nine years and worked in the same company. Saraswati had separated from her husband. Police investigations revealed that Saraswati's relationship with Amit was a major point of contention in her family. Her family disapproved of Amit, citing his poor financial background and lack of education. They had already arranged two marriages for Saraswati-first in 2019 to a man from Morna village in the Bhopal police station area, which ended within two years, and a second marriage in 2022 in Shamli, which lasted just a year. Both marriages reportedly ended because of Saraswati's continued relationship with Amit. Despite several warnings, Saraswati refused to end the affair. On May 31, she returned to her village from Gurgaon and a heated argument broke out at home. As she was preparing to return to Gurgaon that same day, Rajveer Singh, Sumit, and Hardayal allegedly strangled her to death. The trio then transported the body to a forested area near Katia, five kilometers away, poured petrol over it, and set it ablaze in an attempt to destroy evidence. On June 3, police recovered the completely charred body of a woman from the forest. Due to the condition of the body, identification was initially impossible. However, investigators used her Instagram profile to confirm her identity as Saraswati from Jadbad Katia. Police began an intensive investigation following identification on June 5. They interrogated family members and examined their mobile phone call detail records (CDRs). Based on the evidence and confessions obtained during questioning, the case was cracked on June 8. SSP Verma stated that forensic samples had been preserved despite the severe condition of the body. He also announced a cash reward of Rs.15,000 for the police team that solved the case. Police are currently conducting raids to arrest the third accused, truck driver Hardayal, who is on the run....
