Woman's body found; husband held for murder
GORAKHPUR, Feb. 2 -- Gorakhpur police have solved the murder case of a 35-year-old woman whose body was discovered near Gobrahiya Nala early Friday morning under Pipiganj police station limits.
The victim has been identified as Priya Shetty, a Mumbai resident. Her body was found in bushes beneath a small bridge with severe head injuries and a disfigured face, police said on Sunday.
Investigators revealed that Priya was allegedly killed by her husband, Vijay, 37, with assistance from an accomplice. The accused allegedly disposed of her body using a scooter.
SHO Pipiganj Prem Pal Singh said the main accused, Vijay, resides in Marha Pali village under Shahjanwa police station in Gorakhpur district. Vijay, who was already married, worked as a technician at a Mumbai company where he met Priya Shetty and later married her. He returned to Gorakhpur a few months afterwards.
Priya travelled from Mumbai to Gorakhpur four days before the incident, searching for Vijay. He allegedly kept her in a house in Sipah village for three days. Police recovered a Mumbai-to-Gorakhpur train ticket from the victim's jeans pocket, confirming her recent travel.
SP North Gyanendra Kumar said initial evidence suggests the murder was pre-planned. CCTV footage near Allahabad Bank showed two people on a scooter, while blood marks along the road leading to the spot indicate Priya was murdered elsewhere before her body was transported and dumped.
Police said on Thursday night, when Priya was reportedly intoxicated, Vijay and another person took her to an isolated area on a scooter, allegedly strangled her, then smashed her head with bricks and stones to destroy her identity.
"Using CCTV footage and technical evidence, we identified and tracked the suspects," police officials said. More than 15 people were initially detained for questioning. Forensic teams are collecting further evidence. Efforts are underway to arrest the remaining accused....
