Woman regains mobility after dual knee surgery
LUCKNOW, Nov. 19 -- A 46-year-old woman battling years of knee pain and a pronounced bow-legged deformity has received renewed hope after surgeons at Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) performed a rare knee reconstruction using a dual-technique approach, believed to be the first reported in the state. The procedure combined arthroscopic microfracture with a hybrid high tibial osteotomy to address both cartilage damage and joint misalignment.
Doctors said the patient had long suffered from chronic pain and major cartilage loss due to excess pressure on the inner knee compartment. With her condition worsening, the team chose a joint-preserving approach to delay the need for total knee replacement.
The operation was led by Dr Amit Kumar, additional professor of orthopaedics. In the first stage, arthroscopic microfracture was performed to stimulate fibrocartilage growth.
In the second, the tibia was cut and realigned through a high tibial osteotomy to shift weight to the healthier side of the knee.
"Doing both procedures together allows us to treat the cartilage injury and correct the deformity," said Dr Amit Kumar. SGPGIMS director Professor RK Dhiman said the achievement reflects growing expertise in advanced orthopaedic care. htc...
