MEERUT, June 27 -- A pregnant woman allegedly attempted suicide along with her two children following a heated exchange with her husband, a vegetable seller, in Jatoli village under Kankarkheda police station area of Meerut district on Wednesday evening, police said. The woman allegedly consumed pesticide and also gave it to her five-year-old daughter and three-year-old son. Family members rushed the trio to a local hospital where the girl succumbed during treatment, police said. A magistrate and police team reached the spot and recorded the woman's statement, while the body of her daughter was sent for the post-mortem examination. The woman gave birth to a premature baby girl on Thursday, and the newborn was placed in an incubator for specialised care, officials said. According to SP (city) Ayush Vikram Singh, the couple had married nearly eight years ago and the family had been living at the woman's parental house ever since. Investigations revealed that the couple would often engage in verbal duels as the husband had been jobless for quite some time. On Wednesday evening, an altercation broke out between the couple, and the husband walked out of the house in anger, police said. The woman allegedly mixed pesticide in water and gave it to her two children before consuming it herself, police added. While the five-year-old girl was declared dead at the hospital after nearly a couple of hours, the woman and her three-year old son are said to be battling for their lives.
