Woman mauled to death by strays in Kushinagar
GORAKHPUR, Aug. 14 -- A 30-year-old woman, Madhuri, was mauled to death by a pack of stray dogs in Kushinagar district on Tuesday evening.
Her body was discovered at the Panchayat Bhavan in Arjun Dumri village under Hata police station limits, police said.
Hata police station in-charge Ramshay Chouhan confirmed receiving information about the incident.
Madhuri suffered more than two dozen injuries, leading to excessive bleeding. Eyewitnesses claimed the dogs were still attacking the body when locals arrived.
Police reached the spot, drove away the animals with sticks and iron rods, and sent the body for post-mortem examination.
Madhuri's husband, Gorakh Patel, said she had been suffering from mental illness and had gone missing earlier in the day. The family found her body at the Panchayat Bhavan during the search.
Villagers expressed anger over the stray dog menace, recalling earlier attacks and accusing authorities of inaction despite repeated complaints.
Health officials reported a sharp increase in dog bite cases in the Gorakhpur division. In Kushinagar district, the daily average of anti-rabies vaccinations has risen from 30 to 65, chief medical officer Dr Brij Nandan said, adding that this trend has continued for two months.
Dr Suman Kumar of the district hospital in Gorakhpur said adequate vaccine stock is available despite the rise in cases. In the past 48 hours, over 500 people, mostly attacked by stray dogs, have received anti-rabies shots, with 316 on Monday and 220 on Tuesday. The hospital has a reserve of 6,000 doses.
Hospital data shows that in July, 2,278 people were vaccinated, including 1,129 bitten by stray dogs, 710 by pet dogs, 239 by cats, 162 by monkeys, and 38 by other animals.
In the first 12 days of August, more than 1,600 people have already been vaccinated.
In the Maharajganj district, which shares its border with Kushinagar, daily vaccinations have increased from 20 to 45. Between July 1 and August 12, 430 people were vaccinated....
