Dehradun, May 24 -- A day after Chamoli police arrested a 38-year-old woman for allegedly killing her newborn in Nandanagar, police said on Friday that they will conduct a DNA test to establish if child belonged to the accused, police officers aware of the matter said. The woman was produced in the local court on Friday and was sent to 14-day judicial custody, they added. Police are yet to ascertain who the father of the child is, officers said, adding that the woman is a widow. Narendra Singh Rawat, in charge Nandanagar police station, said, "Though she claimed to be mother of the newborn, we will collect DNA samples of her and the deceased to verify her claims. She hasn't revealed who the father of the newborn is." "The woman lost her husband 10 years ago after he died of electrocution. She has three other children," he said. Following the villagers' information that a woman killed her newborn baby by burying the baby in a heap of cowdung after the birth, police arrested the woman and registered a case under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Section 91 (causing or facilitating an unlawful abortion or destruction of a foetus) and Section 94 (offense of concealing or destroying a dead body)".
