Rudrapur, Jan. 2 -- A 60-year-old woman was killed by a wild animal in the Salt block of Almora district on Wednesday evening, marking the third such fatal incident involving women in the Kumaon division within the past six days. Forest department officials are yet to confirm whether the animal involved was a tiger or a leopard, an official said. The victim, identified as Bachuli Devi, a resident of Kholyo Kuwari village in Salt block, was collecting fodder with other women in a nearby forest area when she was attacked. According to officials, the animal injured her and dragged her body nearly a kilometre from the spot of the attack. Forest personnel, along with local villagers, launched a search operation soon after the incident. Bachuli Devi was located and rushed to a hospital, but she succumbed to her injuries on the way, officials said. Senior officers of the forest department reached the site on Thursday to assess the situation and initiate measures to capture the problematic animal. Samples were collected from the spot and sent for laboratory examination to determine whether the attack was carried out by a tiger or a leopard. "It is not yet clear whether the wild animal involved is a tiger or a leopard. As a precautionary measure, we have installed one cage meant for a tiger and two cages for leopards in the area.
