Woman killed as car hits four sleeping on roadside
PRAYAGRAJ, July 20 -- A car ran over four people who were sleeping on the roadside under the Allahabad high court flyover in Civil Lines on Friday night. One woman died, and three others sustained injuries. All of them worked as casual labourers and used to sleep at the spot after work.The accident happened late at night. The car came at high speed from the Ambedkar crossing and hit the group sleeping on the pavement. Eyewitnesses said one woman got stuck under the car and was dragged for some distance. The four young men in the car ran away after the crash, leaving the car behind. Angry locals broke the windows of the car, turned it upside down, and tried to set it on fire. Police teams from the cantonment and civil lines police stations arrived on time and stopped the crowd. They also took the car into custody.
Police said that Chameli Devi, 55, died in the accident. The injured women are Sridevi,65,Bobby,27,and Gulabhkali,60. They are being treated at SRN Hospital.
"We all work at construction sites. We were sleeping on the footpath when the car ran over us," said Bobby, who hurt her hands in the accident. Senior police officers also visited the hospital after getting the news. ACP (civil lines) SP Singh said that two police teams have been formed to catch the driver and the others in the car. A case has been registered based on the families' complaint, and further legal steps are being taken....
