Kanpur, Aug. 23 -- A woman in labour was left waiting on a stretcher outside Lalitpur railway station for nearly 50 minutes on Friday after repeated calls for an ambulance went unanswered. She was eventually taken to hospital in an autorickshaw arranged by railway staff and the Railway Protection Force (RPF). Officials said the passenger, Rati of Kuknu village in Jalaun district, was travelling from Jhansi to Raipur on the Chhattisgarh Express when she developed labour pains. On arrival at Lalitpur, ticket checkers and RPF staff helped her off the coach and placed her on a stretcher in the station's circulating area. Emergency calls were made at 2.54 pm and 3.09 pm, but no ambulance arrived to cover the 2.5 km distance from the station. Witnesses said the woman writhed in pain while women passengers held up clothes to provide privacy. After nearly an hour, the RPF, a woman constable and railway staff hired an autorickshaw to rush her to the government medical college, where she was admitted for treatment. The district has 42 ambulances - 16 under the 102 service and 22 under the 108 service. Chief medical officer Imtiaz Ahmad said an inquiry had been ordered. "Responsibility will be fixed for the delay," he said. Last month, a similar incident was reported at Jhansi railway station, where an expectant mother delivered on the platform with the help of an Army doctor and passengers after no ambulance was available....
