Woman held for selling five-month-old son for Rs.95,000
PRAYAGRAJ, Jan. 23 -- Kaushambi police arrested a woman accused of selling her five-month-old son for Rs.95,000. Acting swiftly on a complaint, the police registered a case of human trafficking, and safely recovered the infant.
The accused woman who bought the child, has also been apprehended, and the in-charge of Tevaan police outpost SI Neeraj Pandey has been suspended for negligence in this serious case.
The incident occurred in Kharauna village in Kaushambi, where the woman allegedly sold the child to a nurse. The police arrested the mother and the nurse on Wednesday night.
SP-Kaushambi Rajesh Kumar said that the accused mother and the woman have been arrested. The woman has been identified as nurse Anita Shukla, a resident of Sangam Kunj Colony in Jayrampur, under Dhoomanganj police station who works in Prayagraj's Dufferin Hospital.
"The child is safe. The woman was preparing to sell the child to another person who is childless," he said. According to the SP, the accused mother had no emotional attachment to the child. Driven by the lure for money, she carried out the deal, he added.
According to the complaint filed by the child's father, Brijesh Kumar (46), he lived in Meerapatti locality of Prayagraj with his wife, Mamta Devi (38) and worked as a labourer. It was their second marriage and from the previous marriage Mamta had four kids and Brijesh had 6 kids.
They got married after a short affair about one and a half years ago in Kaushambi and left home. Their upset family members started a search for the duo, and a complaint was also filed by them with the police. For quite some time, the couple kept moving from place to place, and later took a rented room and started living in Prayagraj where Brijesh started working as a labourer. The couple became parents to a baby boy on August 16, 2025.
It is alleged that on the pretext of visiting a kin, Mamta reportedly sold off her newborn baby for Rs 95,000 to a woman.
On December 28, 2025, when Brijesh returned from work, he found Mamta and the child missing. When she returned shortly afterwards alone, Brijesh questioned her repeatedly, she allegedly avoided giving clear answers and then left for a kin's home in Kaushambi, raising his suspicions, police officials said citing the complaint.
Alarmed, Brijesh approached the Tevaan police outpost of Paschim Sharira police in Kaushambi but when he got no support, he lodged a complaint with SP-Kaushmabi Rajesh Kumar following which his FIR was lodged on Wednesday. The SP said that the in-charge of Tevaan police outpost has been suspended for negligence.
Following the registration of the case under human trafficking laws, the police launched an investigation.
Station House Officer (SHO) Harish Tiwari said the accused woman was arrested, and based on her disclosure, the child was recovered. Preliminary investigations indicate that the baby was sold for Rs.95,000....
