Woman confesses to self-immolation, denies role of husband, in-laws
Haridwar, Oct. 14 -- A woman who sustained 80% burn injuries last week has told police that she set herself ablaze following a quarrel with her husband, in a dramatic turn in the Roshanabad burning case in Haridwar district. She contradicted her parents' earlier allegation that her husband and in-laws poured petrol on her and set her on fire.
According to police, the victim, Bharati Pal, wife of Ashish Kumar, suffered severe burns at her residence in Roshanabad on the night of October 11. Her parents had alleged that her husband and in-laws were responsible for the incident and had demanded strict action.
However, on Monday, Bharati, who is undergoing treatment at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Rishikesh, gave a statement before a tehsildar and a team of doctors, saying she had self-immolated in anger after a heated argument with her husband.
"Bharati Pal, in her statement, denied being set ablaze by her husband or in-laws. She confessed that she poured petrol on herself in a fit of rage after a verbal duel with her husband. There was no physical assault involved," said Nitesh Sharma, station house officer of SIIDCUL police station. Sharma said a case has already been filed in the matter. "We are verifying all angles, including the victim's earlier allegations and her parents' complaint," he said.
Meanwhile, Uttarakhand State Women's Commission Chairperson Kusum Kandwal has taken cognizance of the matter and has written to district police chief Pramendra Dobhal, urging a thorough and impartial probe....
