KANPUR, Sept. 9 -- A woman and her nephew were arrested in Kanpur on Sunday for allegedly murdering her husband ten months ago and hiding the crime, police said. DCP West Dinesh Tripathi said the accused, Laxmi, 40, and her nephew Amit, 25, killed her husband, Shivbir Singh, 45, a factory gatekeeper in the Panki area, on November 2, 2024. The crime surfaced after the victim's mother, Savitri Devi, grew suspicious of her daughter-in-law's repeated claims that her son had gone to Gujarat for work. Savitri Devi, who had been away in Banda, reported her son missing on August 19 this year after finding him absent. Despite Laxmi insisting that her husband had migrated for employment, she failed to provide any contact details. Villagers also told police about Laxmi's alleged illicit relationship with Amit. Under sustained questioning, Amit confessed that Laxmi served a sedative-laced drink to her husband before the duo allegedly hit him on the head with a rod, killing him. They buried the body in a field behind the house and covered it with salt to speed up decomposition. Later, when stray dogs unearthed bones, the accused collected them in a sack and dumped them in the Panki canal. On Sunday night, police and a forensic team dug up the burial site. They recovered skeletal remains, undergarments, clumps of hair, a locket, a belt buckle, and empty salt packets. Police said the couple's two younger children, aged 13 and 8, were inside the house during the crime but were pacified by their mother, while the eldest son, 18, was away. Both accused have been remanded in custody, and a case of murder has been registered. htc...
