Will keep pushing for CBI probe in Pauri case: Cong
Dehradun, Jan. 8 -- Even as the Delhi high court on Wednesday directed the removal of social media posts linking BJP leader Dushyant Gautam to the 2022 Pauri Garhwal receptionist murder within 24 hours, the Uttarakhand Congress said its allegations were based on content shared by Urmila Sanawar, wife of former BJP MLA Suresh Rathore, and it would continue to push for a CBI probe in the case.
"Our allegations are purely based on the audio and video clips shared by Sanawar, wife of former BJP MLA Suresh Rathore. We are seeking an impartial investigation into those allegations. We didn't name any leader from the BJP who was allegedly involved in the 2022 murder case. Our stand is clear that whoever was involved should be brought to book. We will continue to struggle seeking a CBI probe into the matter. It has become a people's movement now. Why was the government scared to order a CBI probe if none of their leader was involved in the case?," said Suryakant Dhasmana, state vice-president of the Uttarakhand Pradesh Congress Committee (UKPCC).
A bench of justice Mini Pushkarna of the Delhi HC also restrained actor Sanawar, Rathore, the Congress, the AAP and others from posting similar content. Gautam filed a defamation suit against Sanawar, Rathore, two political parties, and Uttarakhand Congress president Ganesh Godiyal for linking him to the murder. He also lodged an FIR at Dalanwala police station in Dehradun against former BJP MLA Suresh Rathore, actress Urmila Sanawar, the Uttarakhand unit of the Congress, Uttarakhand Kranti Dal, AAP and unidentified persons over content connecting him to the 2022 murder case.
The BJP welcomed the HC order, stating that defamatory propaganda on social media would now be checked. State BJP president Mahendra Bhatt said the Opposition had been damaging Gautam's image through unverified audio and video clips. "I am hopeful that the court's intervention will put an end to the unethical and shameful campaign against him (Gautam)," Bhatt said.
"It is a political issue. The Congress and the Opposition have been spreading confusion on it and insulting the deceased's daughter. It is surprising that they now have a problem with the victim's family being consulted," he added.
Meanwhile, UKPCC president Godiyal, reacting to the chief minister's remarks on Tuesday, accused the BJP-led state government of avoiding an impartial probe into the murder case, alleging that CM Pushkar Singh Dhami appeared "uncomfortable" following recent revelations.
In a press conference, Godiyal said that when the CM recently addressed the media on an unrelated issue, he became uneasy when questioned about new developments in the case and began counter-questioning journalists. "This reflects the government's intentions," he alleged.
Accusing the state of complicity, Godiyal claimed the authorities knew from the outset that the victim had been murdered and were aware of the motive. He alleged that the government sought to protect influential figures and later destroyed evidence. Godiyal further questioned why the state continued to oppose a CBI inquiry despite new facts emerging and public pressure for a fair investigation.
CM Dhami on Tuesday reiterated that the Uttarakhand government was committed to ensuring justice for the Pauri receptionist and that further action would follow consultations with her parents. "The Pauri receptionist girl murder case, which shook the entire state, was handled with utmost seriousness, sensitivity and transparency. Ensuring justice for this daughter of Uttarakhand has been the top priority of the state government from the very beginning," he said.
Responding to questions on the demand for a CBI probe, he added, "I will personally speak to the victim's parents. Any further decision will be taken only after considering their feelings, pain and expectations."
The deceased, a resident of Uttarakhand's Pauri Garhwal district, worked as a receptionist at Vanantra Resort in Yamkeshwar, Rishikesh. Her body was found in September 2022 from the Chilla canal....
