Widows from Vrindavan to gift 1,001 handcrafted Rakhis to PM Modi
Agra, Aug. 8 -- Four of the elderly widows from Vrindavan will present 1,001 handcrafted Rakhis to Prime Minister Narendra Modi this Rakshabandhan in New Delhi on Saturday.
They will represent widows at Vrindavan who continue with this tradition that blends devotion, dignity, and social change.
"Four of these elderly widow mothers will be Geeta Dasi and Laxmi Dasi from Radha Tila Ashram in Vrindavan, and Chabi Sharma and Sadhana Dasi from Maa Sharda Ashram. The group will be led by 70-year-old Chabi Sharma.
They will leave for Delhi after sanction received for their schedule to meet the PM on Rakshabandhan," said Madan Jha, media advisor for Sulabh International office at New Delhi over phone.
"These unique Rakhis have been lovingly prepared by widows residing in Maa Sharda and other ashrams supported by Sulabh International as part of its Widows Welfare Programme," stated Kumar Dilip, president of Sulabh International.
'Each Rakhi is adorned with vibrant images of Lord Ram, Lord Krishna, and the Prime Minister himself - reflecting a spiritual connection and personal affection. The women from these ashrams have been tying Rakhi to the Prime Minster for the last several years," said Dilip.
Over the past fortnight, a Rakhi-making workshop was held at Maa Sharda Ashram, where around a dozen widows worked enthusiastically to design and decorate the Rakhis. On Thursday, hundreds of widows gathered at the historic Gopinath Temple in Vrindavan to offer their blessings and complete the final preparations.
This initiative was started by late Dr Bindeshwar Pathak, the visionary founder of the Sulabh Movement, who aimed to end the social exclusion of widows by including them in all major Hindu rituals - from Holi to Diwali to Raksha Bandhan....
