LUCKNOW, March 23 -- Speakers at a panel discussion emphasised the need to preserve Lucknow's Ganga-Jamuni tehzeeb and shared cultural heritage, warning that rapid urbanisation and changing social dynamics pose challenges to its identity.
The panel discussion titled 'Lucknow's Proprietary: Who Owns Our City?' was organised by Aadaab Arz Lucknow at Colvin Taluqdars' College on Sunday, bringing together academics, cultural observers and residents for a nuanced conversation on the city's identity.
Moderated by Kanak Rekha Chauhan, the panel featured Sachchidanand Singh, principal of Colvin Taluqdars' College, Ruth Chakravarty, retired faculty of Isabella Thoburn College, and Hafeez Kidwai, a young voice and keen observer of Lucknow's cultural ethos, according to a release shared with the media on Sunday.
Speakers said Lucknow's identity extends beyond geography and is rooted in its language, etiquette and inclusive social fabric. They stressed that preserving this legacy requires collective responsibility. They stressed that the city's essence lies in its shared heritage, which transcends communities and must be preserved through collective responsibility.
The panel also reflected on how rapid urbanisation and changing social dynamics pose challenges to preserving this legacy, calling for conscious civic participation to safeguard the city's distinctive character.
Several prominent residents, including Manish Mehrotra, Sheikh Tariq, Farzana Mohsin, Kalpana Ravel, Pradeep Kapoor and others from diverse walks of life, reflecting the city's pluralistic fabric.
