New Delhi, June 26 -- Shubman Gill in his first Test as Indian captain was handed a rather tough defeat to stomach by England, especially after India found themselves in a dominant position for most part of the five-day Test match. The in-transition Indian team lost by five wickets in the first Test at Headingley, Leeds on Tuesday. Not often does one see a team with five centurions lose the match but England successfully chased down 371 in the final innings to complete their second highest most successful chase. Ben Duckett's tremendous knock (149) and help from Zak Crawley (65), Joe Root (53*) and Jamie Smith (44*) ensured they romp home with relative ease. "(It was) a brilliant Test, we had our chances in the match but a few dropped catches, lower order did not contribute as much as we would have liked it to but proud of the team and overall a good effort," said Gill in the post-match presentation. India had scored 471 and 364 in the match but Gill pointed out that they fell short in the second innings and that more was expected from the lower order. In fact, India lost 6 wickets for 31 runs and 7 wickets for 41 runs in the first innings. "Yesterday we were thinking we would give around 430-435 odd runs and declare. Unfortunately, our last six wickets scored just 20-25 runs, we didn't score runs and that's never a good sign," Gill said. "Even after their brilliant opening partnership, we did have our chances but just didn't go our way in this match. That (the lower order not contributing) was something we spoke about. When you are out in the middle, it happens so quickly. One of those things we have to rectify in the upcoming matches." India will also be replaying their missed opportunities while fielding as they dropped a whopping ten catches in the match. "Chances don't come easy on wickets like these and we dropped quite a few. It's a young team, learning one and hopefully we will be able to improve on those aspects," he added. Speaking about what could have gone differently on Day 5, Gill said, "The first session we were quite spot on, didn't give away that many runs, we bowled pretty well. It's hard to stop the runs once the ball gets old and you have to keep picking wickets if you have to stay in the game. Unfortunately, some edges didn't go our way. They took their chances after the ball got old." While the pitch was specifically tougher on the seamers, spinners were expected to play a bigger role....
