ways to address 'maths phobia' among Class 10-12 students discussed
LUCKNOW, Dec. 28 -- It is important to have innovative pedagogical strategies and hands-on learning to address mathematics phobia among students. This was highlighted during a session "How to Make Mathematics More Palatable, Especially at High School and +2 Level" convened by Prof SS Khare as part of the second day of the 91st annual conference of the Indian Mathematical Society (IMS).
The four-day conference is underway at Lucknow University. Prof Khare is the president of the Indian Mathematical Society. During the session, talks by experienced educators and researchers on methods to address mathematics phobia among students were held.
Besides, a plenary lecture by Prof Dipendra Prasad, mathematics department, IIT Bombay, was organised. In his lecture, he presented deep theoretical insights in representation theory. It was followed by the PL Bhatnagar Memorial Award Lecture, delivered by Prof Rajen Kumar Sinha, mathematics department, IIT Guwahati, which highlighted recent advances in numerical methods for interface problems. Later, a symposium on "Recent Advances in Algebra", convened by Prof Meena Sahai of Lucknow University, included invited talks on group algebras, cryptography, linear codes, and commutator identities. Simultaneously, the symposium on "Operation Techniques", convened by Prof SK Upadhyay, (IIT, BHU), covered topics in operator theory, transform methods and pseudo-differential operators. The AM Mathai Award Lecture was presented by Tanmay Sarkar of IIT Jammu, on error estimates for IPDG schemes in the resistive magnetic induction equation, while the Subhash Bhatt Award Lecture was delivered by Himadri Halder, IIT Bombay, on tjhe Bohr radius for Banach spaces on simply connected domains. The Ganesh Prasad Memorial Award Lecture wwas delivered by Prof S Ponnusamy, department of mathematics, IIT Madras. His lecture offered significant contributions to the area of geometric functionhtc...
