Lucknow, Oct. 8 -- Police have arrested a wanted opium smuggler from Haryana after nearly a year on the run. The accused, Rohtas alias Fauji, 39, is a resident of Sirsa district in Haryana. He was caught by the police on October 6 and brought to Lucknow on a transit remand. A court later sent him to jail. Rohtas was wanted in a major drug smuggling case that took place on the night of October 26, 2024. Police had stopped a truck and a tractor-trolley near Kamalpath intersection, close to the Sithouli Kala Bridge. During the search, they found 317.15 kg of poppy straw hidden under wooden logs. Three other men - Ramsahay, Basant Yadav, and Pramod Rawat - were arrested on the spot. The smuggled goods were being taken to Punjab, where processed opium can sell for around Rs.1 lakh per kilogram, police said. Investigations showed that Rohtas owned the truck and had planned the smuggling with his team. They tried to avoid getting caught by hiding the poppy straw under wood.While the others were caught soon after the seizure, Rohtas had managed to escape. He was finally arrested from his hometown after almost a year. Police also revealed that Rohtas has a long criminal history. He has several cases under the NDPS Act in both Haryana and Rajasthan, along with charges of kidnapping and assault....
