VVIP guest house to replace Rani Bettiah's 'kothi'
PRAYAGRAJ, June 15 -- A VVIP guest house will be built on land that currently houses Rani Bettiah's royal 'kothi' or bungalow on Maharishi Dayanand Marg in Civil Lines, officials said. The proposed facility will have high-level arrangements for the stay of dignitaries such as the president, the prime minister and other VVIPs.
The district authorities said they had the approval to build the guest house for which the bungalow would be demolished, as the lease of the Nazul plot expired in 1960.
Earlier, the Bihar government decided to take possession of all the properties of the Bettiah Raj. Two plots marked in Civil Lines and Kydganj locality of the city were claimed by the Bihar government. The plot located in Civil Lines is known as Rani Bettiah's Kothi, while the property in Kydganj locality is known as Rani Bettiah's Haata.
Even though the Bihar government had staked its claim, an investigation by the district administration here stated that the bungalow was built on Nazul land. The queen had taken it on rent before the independence. Hence, the land originally belonged to the Uttar Pradesh government, they argued and stated that the Bihar government had been informed about the fact.
District magistrate Ravindra Kumar Mandar said an order to build a special guest house on the land had been issued. Also, the land has been handed over to the public works department, which is likely to commence the construction soon after the completion of formalities.
It may be mentioned that the kothi is built on 11,000 square metre. Harendra Kishore Singh was the last king of the Bettiah Raj. He died in March 1893. After him, his first wife Ratan Kunwar became the queen of the Bettiah Raj but she also died in 1896. After her, his second wife Maharani Janaki Kunwar took over the Bettiah Raj but the Bihar government declared her ineligible and the entire property was taken over by the state. After this, Maharani Janaki Kunwar came to Prayagraj and started living in the kothi built in Civil Lines. According to the documents of the Bihar government, she died in the bungalow on November 24, 1954.
Currently, the headquarters of the registrar of Industrial Tribunal and Labor Court is functioning in the building. This office shall continue to remain in a portion of the land....
