VARANASI, Dec. 28 -- Varanasi has been included among 48 cities identified by Indian Railways for doubling operational capacity by 2030, Ashok Kumar, said public relations officer of the Varanasi Division of North Eastern Railways. As Indian Railways has set a target of doubling the railway capacity in Varanasi city, the ongoing and proposed capacity expansion works at Varanasi City and Banaras stations will play a key role in achieving this target, Kumar said. He added that North Eastern Railway's two major stations-Banaras and Varanasi City-are located in Kashi. Passengers are being provided with improved amenities, and work has been sanctioned for a stabling line at Banaras railway station, which, once completed, will enable the operation of additional trains. For capacity expansion at Varanasi City station, work has been sanctioned for 2 running lines, 1 island platform, 2 stabling lines, and 1 dock line, which will allow more trains to operate, said Kumar. He added that doubling work on the Bakulha-Manjhi and Belthara Road-Pipikol sections is nearing completion, further boosting capacity. Additionally, upgrades under the Amrit Bharat Yojana have increased passenger handling at the station. He added that significant capacity expansion works have recently been undertaken at Banaras station of North Eastern Railway. Currently, the station has 8 platforms, 4 washing pits, and 10 running lines, including 4 stabling lines, handling 104 passenger trains and 14 freight trains daily, Kumar said. He said that Varanasi City station currently has 9 running lines, including 5 platforms, 1 washing pit, and 1 stabling line. Using these facilities, 108 passenger trains and 14 freight trains operate daily, with 28 trains originating or terminating at the station each day....
