VARANASI, Jan. 24 -- The Varanasi Nagar Nigam has started the facility of free death registration at Manikarnika Ghat and Harishchandra Ghat. Apart from data collection, the measures will also help people avail the facility free of cost. On Friday, mayor Ashok Kumar Tiwari formally inaugurated the 'Free Death Registration' system at Harishchandra Ghat. This system will enable accurate and real-time tracking of the number of bodies brought for cremation at both the major ghats of Varanasi. While inaugurating the registration process, the mayor said that the municipal corporation's efforts are not limited to the cremation grounds. The corporation has identified 12 large cemeteries of the Muslim and Christian communities in the city. The computerized death registration system will soon be launched at these cemeteries as well, so that every section of the city can benefit from this facility. The mayor said that the registration process is completely free. Its sole purpose is to obtain accurate data on cremations taking place at the city's main ghats. Families will only need to provide the requested information, for which they will not have to pay anything. The registration slip will facilitate the issuance of death certificates. The Municipal Corporation has deployed employees in three shifts and they will be present at the ghats 24/7 and record basic information such as the name, address, and age of each deceased person....
