GORAKHPUR, Nov. 14 -- Tension gripped Gajpur crossing area under Gorakhpur's Gagaha police station limits after a youth Aakash Verma, 23, of Gajpur died in a road accident on Thursday morning, police said. Enraged villagers blocked Gajpur-Rudrapur and Gajpur-Gagaha roads, alleging police involvement in extortion from a truck driver led to the tragedy. SHO of Gagaha police station, Atul Chaturvedi said, "The situation is now under control. We understand the public's sentiments and have initiated an investigation into the accident. Necessary action will be taken against those found responsible." He also assured a fair probe and support for the victim's family. Earlier, the protesting villagers refused to clear the roads even as they demanded suspension of the Gajpur police outpost in-charge, arrest of police personnel accused of extortion, compensation for the family of the deceased and construction of speed breakers at accident-prone spots.
