LUCKNOW, Feb. 2 -- A season best six-wicket haul by pacer Vijay Kumar helped spirited Uttar Pradesh script a facile an innings and 15-run win over hosts Uttarakhand to stay on top of Elite Group D of the Under-23 CK Nayudu Trophy, at the Kaushiki Cricket Ground in Ramnagar on Sunday. Saharanpur's Kumar ripped through Uttarakhand's batting line-up with 6/47 as hosts collapsed for 133 in their second innings after Uttar Pradesh took a solid 148-run first innings while scoring 318 in reply to Uttarakhand's first innings total of 170. On Sunday, Kumar added three more wickets to his overnight tally of three. He was well supported by fellow pacer Prashant Yadav, who finished the day with 3/31 in 10 overs, whereas Akshu bajwa took 1/10. Even after a delayed start due to wet outfield, Kumar had his first wicket of the day by removing skipper Harsh Rana (4) before sending back Sanskar Rawat (1) after sometime. The wickets kept tumbling like nine pins on the penultimate day of the four-day encounter as Prashant then sent back home to Uday Sharma (9) and Utkarsh (9) before trapping Nishu Patel (0) leg before wicket. However, Kumar had the last man Devansh (2) soon, castling him with a perfect swinger. Railways and Karnataka with 39 points each are at the second and third place, respectively, whereas Himachal Pradesh with 32 points in four matches are very much in the contention for a berth in the knockout. Now, Uttar Pradesh will be required to notch up yet another big win in their last league match against Chandigarh, starting February 6, at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur. "Vijay was outstanding today and was well supported by Prashant. We still have one game to play and I am sure that boys will give their best in the match against Chandigarh," Uttar Pradesh's chief coach and former India cricketer Gyanendra Pandey said after the match. As many as three matches will be played on the opening day of the 36th All India KD Singh Babu Sub-Junior Boys Hockey Tournament, beginning Monday, at the Padma Shri Mohd Shahid Synthetic Hockey Stadium here in Vijayant Khand.
